I love to go thrifting, because I love filling my home and studio with unique finds! I not only love to go thrifting, but I love to upcycle thrifted projects! Upcycling is about repurposing old items and transforming them into something entirely new and beautiful. Today I have a really fun upcycled project that is perfect for your Spring and Summer blooms featuring old vases and Woodpeckers Crafts’ wooden balls.

I love this DIY because it showcases that with a little bit of imagination, you can create a truly custom décor item at minimal cost. Woodpeckers Crafts has so many incredible wooden products, and I used 2 of their different ball sizes to give the vases unique style, and a high-end hobnail effect.

I hope this project inspires you to try your own hand at an upcycled project!

·    Thrifted Vases. Any smooth vase will work. Look for unique shapes.

·    Craft Glue. I used Beacon’s Multi-Grip for this project.

·    Spray Paint. I used Rustoleum’s French Lilac, Dreamy Lavender, and Vintage Tea

Find the Vase at a Thrift Store

This project starts at the thrift store, or by foraging your own vases.

Thrift stores are a haven for unique vases waiting to be given a new lease on life. From vintage glassware to quirky ceramic pieces, the possibilities are endless.

You can also look through your own personal collection of vases.

Look for vases that have a smooth finish, and are a unique shape!

Glue the Wooden Balls to the Vases

Clean your vases with a household cleaner.

Then, determine the proper placement for the wooden balls.

Use a strong glue, like Beacon’s Multi-Grip, and attach the wooden balls to the vase one at a time.

*Hold the ball in place for a little while until the glue starts to dry. This will avoid the ball from slipping down the vase.

*The key here is to embrace whimsy; there are no rules when it comes to arranging the balls. Whether it's a random scattering or a meticulously planned pattern, let creativity be your guide. Let the vases tell the story!

Spray Paint the Vases

Once the wooden balls are in place and the glue has dried, it's time to add a splash of color.

*I waited one day for the glue to dry and cure before I spray painted them.

Determine a color palette that works for your upcycled vases. I used colorful and bold hues that were inspired by Spring.

Then, apply two coats of spray paint to the upcycled vases.

*Make sure the paint is dry in between each spray paint session.

Add Flowers to the Vases

The next and final step is to add beautiful flowers to the vases. To complement the whimsical charm of these wooden ball-adorned vases, I opted for flowers that are equally playful and enchanting. I chose some whimsical cosmos and colorful zinnias from my own cut flower garden, but you can adorn your vases with any flowers your heart desires! Think bright daisies, delicate daffodils, or cheerful sunflowers – anything that brings a smile to the face and a touch of nature indoors.

I LOVE how these vases turned out, and I LOVE their price point even more. What was once forgotten in thrift store aisles has been reborn as unique décor, ready to add character and charm to any space. Each vase tells a story of creativity, resourcefulness, and the beauty of giving new life to old treasures.

The Beauty of Upcycling

The beauty of upcycling lies not only in the end result but also in the process itself. It's about embracing imperfections, celebrating creativity, and finding joy in the act of transformation. With a bit of imagination and a willingness to think outside the box, ordinary objects can become extraordinary works of art.

So, the next time you find yourself browsing the shelves of a thrift store, keep an eye out for those hidden gems waiting to be upcycled. With a little glue, paint, and a sprinkle of wooden ball whimsy, you too can turn discarded items into treasures that bring joy and inspiration into your home. Happy crafting!
