Springtime at a Local Flower Farm - Cuts of Color

Flower 67.jpg

You may know that I love flowers, and take major inspiration from them. So you can imagine that I was thrilled and honored, when Rita Anders with Cuts of Color invited me to her cut flower farm to showcase some of the beautiful blooms this time of the year. Today I want to take you behind-the-scenes at Cuts of Color.

But first, a little history…

Rita Anders, owner and operator of Cuts of Color, began growing greenhouse tomatoes in a 4,800 sq. foot greenhouse in 1979 when her grandfather retired and wanted her to take over the family business. In 2005, Rita decided to expand her business to grow beautiful flowers along with several vegetable varieties, and various herbs. Since then, Rita’s farm has really bloomed because Cuts of Color now consists of 26,000 sq. feet of greenhouses in addition to two acres in outside flower beds. Cuts of Color also practices sustainable agriculture using organic growing methods whenever possible.

Rita sells her flowers to Central Market in Houston most Tuesdays and Fridays. She also designs for weddings and special events, and provides bouquets to the local community. 100% of the bouquets that Rita and her team create for Central Market and for the local community are used with flowers that are hand grown on her property. I think that is amazing, considering the Texas heat can make it hard to grow anything during parts of the year.

Rita attributes her success to, ”hard work and a strong support system.” I love working with Rita, because of her friendly and very hardworking nature. She did a wonderful job with my flowers for my wedding almost ten years ago, and I have purchased her flowers for events and to enjoy at home many times since then. The quality and vibrancy of her flowers are amazing.

Rita is always happy to welcome you to her farm, but please call in advance.

For your convenience, please ennjoy a video of some of the beautiful flowers that are mentioned below in this walking tour blog post:

Please continue for a walking tour of some of the beautiful flowers in bloom during Spring at Cuts of Color.

Now, let’s peek inside some of the greenhouses to see what flowers are blooming.

As I walked into the greenhouses, I was reminded of one of my favorite childhood books: The Secret Garden. Everywhere I turned was truly stunning, and somewhat magical. A new flower to see in every corner.

Anemone

Rita’s anemomes are stunning! They add the prettiest whimsy and daintiness to any bouquet. And the variety of colors and textures she has is truly breathtaking!

Dahlia

I was blown away by the variety, size, and color options of Rita’s Dahlias. Some were as large as my hand, and some were as delicate as a rose.

Poppy

It is hard to pick a favorite, but Rita’s Poppies may be mine. They are so delicate and beautiful in person, and I love the whimsical aspect and movement they bring to any bouquet.

Snapdragon

Snapdragons always bring me back to my childhood, because my late granny had so many blooming every year. I love the variety of colors that Rita offers.

Sweat Pea

Talk about a dream! That is what it felt like walking through the sweat pea wall in the greenhouse. So many stunning and delicate sweet peas to choose from!

Delphinium

Such a statement piece! Rita’s Delphiniums were not only stunning, but they were rich in their color and height. Some of them were taller than me. I loved the variety of purples, blues, and whites she had on the farm.

Godetia

This is a new-to-me flower, but I loved the variegated look of these Godetias. I also think they would make a lovely arrangement on their own since they grow in clusters.

Bells of Ireland

Rita had a lot of these vibrant Dianthus on her farm. They came in purple, pinks, red, and white and make beautiful additions to any bouquet!
