I am so excited to share another fun project using Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint with you. With Valentine’s Day around the corner, I thought a heart garland would be so fun to make. I enjoyed making salt dough ornaments over Christmas with my children, so I used the same recipe from Mommypotamus for these hearts. It is so simple and only uses 3 ingredients that I am sure you already have in your kitchen.
I wanted to create an ombre effect with the garland with Miss Mustard Seed’s Tricycle Red as the star of the show. I have seen other crafts and painters mix Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint to create their own custom colors. This was my first time mixing Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint colors. I had so much fun mixing the powder paint to create my own custom colors for this garland. Pink and red are my favorite color combinations, and they are perfect for Valentine’s Day. However, you can choose any color combination you want, and with Miss Mustard’s Milk Paint the color possibilities are endless!
I love how the colors turned out and I am excited to continue to mix the milk paint for future projects.

New to Milk Paint?
If you have been here for a while you know that I love Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint as witnessed by my most recent milk paint endeavors: Farmhouse Christmas Village, Thanksgiving Tablescape, DIY Milk Paint Pumpkins, Thrifted Windsor Chair Makeover with Milk Paint, DIY Dresser Makeover with Milk Paint, Media Cabinet Makeover with Milk Paint, and the DIY Bench Makeover with Milk Paint.
Beginning your milk paint endeavors with smaller projects like this is a great place to start. I love painting furniture with milk paint, but it can be intimidating. The key is to just have fun! Milk paint is very forgiving and you really can’t go wrong.
For your convenience, I have created this step-by-step video so you can see how I made this personalized heart garland with milk paint. Then continue below to follow the step-by-step picture tutorial to make your own Salt Dough Heart Garland just in time for Valentine’s Day.
Enjoy the video below to learn how to make your own personalized heart garland, then follow along for the step-by-step tutorial to make your own Salt Dough Heart Garland with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint just in time for Valentine’s Day!
Make the Salt Dough Hearts
I used this recipe to create the salt dough ornaments.
Use an embossed rolling pin to add an impression into the rolled out dough.
Cut out the hearts with a cookie cutter.
Use a straw to create holes at the top of the ribbon.
Bake the dough and then let it cool.
Mix Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint to Create Your Own Custom Colors
Mix 1 part paint powder to 1 part water.
I always recommend starting with less so you don’t waste your product. You can always make more paint later. A little bit of milk paint goes a long way!
Whisk the paint together with the water until the paint is fully integrated into the water.
I have found that a miniature whisk is the best mixing tool to ensure the milk powder stays fully integrated into the water.
Your paint mixture should look like a thin pancake batter once it is mixed.
I created 4 different colors for this garland.
For the first color, I mixed 1 part Tricycle to 1 part water. For the second color, I mixed 1 part Tricycle to 1 part Farmhouse White. For the third color, I mixed 1 part Tricycle to 3 parts Farmhouse White. For the last color, I mixed 1 part Tricycle to 3 parts Arabesque.
Paint the Hearts with Miss Mustard Seed’s Milk Paint
Paint 1 coat of milk paint to the front and back of the hearts.
Apply Miss Mustard Seed’s Antique Wax and Furniture Wax to Add Details to the Salt Dough Hearts
Once dry, use a wax brush to add antique wax to the heart to highlight the details in the heart.
Buff off the extra antique wax with a clean cloth.
Apply furniture wax to the hearts with a clean cloth.
Tie the Milk Painted Salt Dough Hearts onto the Ribbon to Create a Garland
Attach the ribbon to the heart with a cow hitch knot.
Tie each heart to the ribbon.
Enjoy your Custom Heart Garland!
