Today I am excited to share my children’s vintage-inspired shared bedroom. As I mentioned in the design board blog post, my children’s room needed a makeover. A little over two years ago I shared our children’s shared bedroom on the blog. A space full of whimsy, color, and cute animals. Their room was one of my favorites in the house, and it made me so happy! Since that post over two years ago, we had another child and we accumulated a lot more things. What started out as a breath of fresh, happy air turned into an uninspired room with too much clutter. Our youngest recently moved out of the crib in our master bedroom, and into the larger crib in the shared room with his brother and sister. With the transition of all three of my children in the same room, I thought this was the best time to be creative and make this space feel inspiring and fun again.

My inspiration for the room started with the color palette. I adore vintage quilts, and I have always been drawn to the vintage color palettes found in those quilts. I also noticed the same color palette in the vintage children paintings and prints that I already owned. Then, I saw the same color similarities in the vintage tin toys that I had stored away on top of my children’s closet. So I combined these three very nostalgic pieces and pulled colors from that.

My goal for this room was to save money and use what I currently had as well as to create a fun, clutter-free space that would allow my children a chance to play, learn, and dream together. To achieve this I repainted the kids’ hand-me-down dresser with Miss Mustard Seed’s stunning Tricycle Milk Paint as you can see in this blog post: DIY Dresser Makeover with Milk Paint, and I also repainted their armoire with the same paint color. I kept Irish Mint by Benjamin Moore on the walls because it is such a happy color. I kept their fantastic rug from Rugs USA that has held up so well with my children for over two years.

So grab a cup of coffee or tea, and read on for the all of the details behind my children’s shared bedroom. I hope it brings you as much joy as it does to me and to my children. I believe my son’s initial reaction to the room says it all, “Mom, this space is so happy and clean. I can play!”

Craft Area/Learning Area

As soon as you walk into the room, you see the kids’ craft area/learning area. My children are 6, 4, and 1. My two oldest love to craft, color, paint, and draw. I wanted a dedicated space for them to do just that. This metal table and chairs is perfect for them, because it is sturdy and so easy to clean. They love this area.

I find clean up easier for myself and for my children when I keep the table free of clutter. I added some of their favorite tools to vintage buckets inside of these charming metal shelves that I found on Amazon (linked below).

I also added some of my chidren’s favorite vintage and reproduction tin toys (color inspiration) to the shelves.

My children LOVE picking me flowers, and they enjoyed dressing up their craft area with some of the Floret Flower Cosmos Cupcake Blush flowers from my cut garden.

Another source of color inspiration for the room is the vintage art. My mother-in-law gifted me the above piece from Round Top.

Crib/Reading Area

This beautiful crib from Restoration Hardware (not available anymore) has been used by all 3 of my children. I love the grandness of it, and so I keep the bedding and accessories very simple.

The hat above the crib was a sweet gift to my daughter from my mother during a wonderful estate sale shopping trip with my daughter, my mother, and my late grandmother. I am reminded of that beautiful day every time I look at it!

I kept our fantastic glider (linked below) so I could sing and read to my babies at night. And, so they could have a comfy place to snuggle up to with a book.

The clear floating shelves behind the rocker feature some of their favorite books. I keep the rest of their books upstairs in the playroom.

DIY Dick & Jane Vintage Prints Gallery Wall

I love the original gallery wall that my husband created for the space. I updated the pictures from animals to vintage children’s literature to go with the space better.

I found a vintage Dick & Jane book on Etsy. Since the picture pages were smaller than the frame and matte (and I didn’t want to buy a new frame or matte), I cut them out to fit the frame. Then I added a red colored cardstock to the back of each picture to create a cohesive look, and to go with the color palette.

I love the playfulness and simplicity of the Dick and Jane characters, and the colors are perfect. I enjoy watching my children reading/try to read the playful text.

Children’s Shared Bedroom Storage

I had to get clever with the storage. Our farmhouse is about 100 years old, and it doesn’t have a lot of storage options to begin with. I also don’t have a lot of floor space for additional storage options.

Their clothes are hiding in their upcycled dresser. Their upcycled armoire holds more clothes on the top, and their coloring books and activity books are in the drawer at the bottom. The copper pale at the top of the armoire holds their legos. They have a built-in closet that holds more drawers and specialty toys. I also have a tupperware bin under each of their beds for toys. In the hallway outside of their rooms, they each have a basket for toys.

I tried to keep it simple and have only the necessities in their room so it doesn’t get too cluttered. They have a playroom upstairs which has more of their toys. This has really helped with clean up, and has given them the freedom to play and create without too much clutter.

Children’s Beds with Vintage Quilts

This is my favorite view of my children’s bedroom. So many fun elements with the vintage quilts, vintage toys, and vintage prints.

The pennant garland and vintage tin toys were decorations at the baby shower for my first son. I love that I can reuse them in this space.

Norman Rockwell is one of my favorite artists as he was present all over my childhood home. I was so happy when I found the above print that was professionally matted in the perfect red at our local thrift store for $20.

The larger vintage children’s print at the top is another gift from my mother-in-law from a trip to Round Top.

My husband made this DIY Growth Chart many years ago, and it has followed us to 4 different homes. Growing up I had one in my parent’s house, and it was so fun to compare my sibling’s height and my own height year after year. I love that my children can have the same tradition in their own bedroom.

Thank you so much for following along for the tour of my children’s shared bedroom. I hope you enjoyed it as much as I did putting it together.
