Pom-poms are such a wonderful embellishment that helps to bring a little extra cheer and charm into your life. I love adding them to my craft projects, and also more permanent home decor items. Case in point: Recently while shopping at one of my favorite stores I came across this adorable pom-pom lamp shade. However, the lamp shade was too expensive. So I decided to make my own version at a fraction of the price. I like my version so much, because 1) the color of the pom-poms are custom to my space, 2) it was inexpensive 3) it makes me so happy to know that I made it.

If you have been here for a while you may know that I love using Clover’s pom-pom makers for my projects as you can see from the DIY Colorful Pom-Pom Christmas Tree, the DIY Pom-Pom Heart Wreath for Valentine’s Day, the DIY Pom-Pom Summer Floral Arrangement, and more recently the DIY Christmas Village Pom-Pom Wreath. Clover’s pom-pom makers make it so easy and fun to create consistent and cute pom-poms every time in less time. Plus, the different sizes allow you to experiment with so many different projects. The possibilities are endless!

Today I hope to encourage you to think outside of the box when decorating with pom-poms to know that they can also be applied to more permanent home decor items like a blanket, picture frames, baskets, and lamp shades.

For your convenience, I have created a step-by-step video so you can see how I made the pom-poms using Clover’s pom-pom maker, and then how I attached them to the lamp shade. Then continue below to follow the step-by-step images to make your own DIY Pom-Pom Lamp Shade.

To make your own pom-pom lamp shade, you will need:

Make the Pom-Poms

*For this project I used the 1 & 3/4 inch pom-pom maker. However, you can choose whatever size best fits your lamp shade. Clover has a variety of pom-pom maker sizes to choose from.

Open up the pom-pom maker. Tightly wrap the yarn around one side of the pom-pom maker arm until you have a full, consistent amount of yarn on your pom-pom arm.

Then, close the pom-pom maker arm and carry the yarn over to the other arm. Continue to wrap until you have a full, consistent amount of yarn on your other pom-pom arm.

*Keep in mind the more yarn you add to the pom-pom maker, the fluffier and more full the pom-pom will be.

Once you achieve the yarn fullness you are after close the arm on the other side. Snip the excess yarn.

Cut a separate piece of yarn and set it aside.

Ensure that both pom-pom arms are tightly closed, then follow the pom-pom maker guideline in the middle and cut the yarn all the way through and around.

Once you cut the yarn all the way around the pom-pom maker, double knot the extra piece of yarn around the pom-pom.

Now for my favorite part: open the pom-pom maker arms, then slowly pull the pom-pom maker apart, revealing the cutest pom-pom ever!

Now it is time to fine tune and give your pom-pom a little trim. Cut off any excess yarn around the pom-pom to give it a full and consistent look.

Make enough pom-poms for the lamp shade.

*I created 12 pom-poms for my lamp shade. I also stayed with one color, however you can have fun with it and choose as many colors as you want for your lamp shade.

Attach the Pom-Poms to the Lamp Shade

But first, the before. I love the base of my lamp shade, but I wanted the top to have a little more personality without being too overwhelming. So, I kept my design pom-pom placement simple and symmetrical, because the base of my lamp already had a lot of personality and the pom-poms add even more.

Once you determine the pattern of your pom-poms, measure out the pom-poms. I used the lamp shade 3-point interior structure to space out the pom-poms correctly. You can also use measuring tape, and then add pencil marks directly to the lamp shade.

Then attach the pom-poms to the lamp shade one at a time with permanent fabric glue.

*Tip: Once you apply the two pom-poms in a line, let them stand and dry until you move onto the next row. This will ensure your glue is dry and that the pom-poms won’t move around.
