Today I wanted to share a first look into the makeover of my children’s shared bedroom. A little over two years ago I shared our children’s shared bedroom. A space full of whimsy, color, and cute animals. Their room was one of my favorites in the house, and it made me so happy! Since that post over two years ago, we had another child and we accumulated a lot more things. What started out as a breath of fresh, happy air turned into an uninspired room with too much clutter. Our youngest recently moved out of the crib in our master bedroom, and into the larger crib in the shared room with his brother and sister. With the transition of all three of my children in the same room, I thought this was the best time to be creative and make this space feel inspiring and fun again. I am still working behind-the-scenes on this room, but in the meantime I want to show you the direction I am going and my inspiration this time around.
My goal for this room was to save money and use what I currently had as well as to create a fun, clutter-free space that would allow my children a chance to play, learn, and dream together. To achieve this I am repainting some current furniture/hand-me-down furniture with Miss Mustard Seed’s stunning Tricycle Milk Paint, and pulling pictures from storage, and reusing toys and decorations from my first son’s baby shower decorations.
Back to the inspiration. My inspiration started with the color palette. I adore vintage quilts, and I have always been drawn to the vintage color palettes found in those quilts. I also noticed the same color palette in the vintage children paintings and prints that I already owned. Then, I saw the color similarities in the vintage tin toys that I had stored away on top of my children’s closet. So I combined these three very nostalgic pieces and pulled colors from that.
Starting point: Irish Mint by Benjamin Moore is such a happy color, and I knew I wanted to keep it on the walls. I also wanted to keep their fantastic rug from Rugs USA that has held up so well with my children for over two years. It is such a happy and colorful rug that hides the stains so well. From there, I pulled the color palette right out of the wall and my inspiration pieces, and I came up with the irish mint for the walls, pops of navy to ground the space, bold red to add a sense of fun, blush as a feminine touch for my daughter, and a butter yellow to add a touch of vintage.
I am so happy with how this room is coming together, and I love watching my children’s eyes light up as I continue to make changes to it.
Stay tuned, because next week I will share a furniture makeover featuring a hand-me-down dresser from my parents, and then I will reveal the whole room soon after!
Thank you for coming along this decorating journey with me.
