Not All Thrift Stores Are Created Equal: My Top Thrifting Tips
One of the most common questions I get is:
“How do you find so many good things at the thrift store?”
I totally get it. When you see someone sharing their amazing finds, it’s easy to wonder how they seem to have all the luck. But here’s the thing I always tell people:
Not all thrift stores are created equal.
Before we get started, please enjoy this video talking about my Top Thrift Store Tips, then read on for more below!
If you’re just starting your thrifting journey or if you’ve been thrifting for years but feel stuck in a rut, here are some of my favorite tips to help you score more treasures (and have fun doing it!). And, a disclaimer not every thrift haul is a gold mine so just enjoy the process!
1. Shop Around
Just like restaurants, bookstores, or even grocery stores, no two thrift stores are exactly alike. Some may specialize in furniture, others in home goods or clothing. The vibe, the pricing, the organization—it all varies.
So if your local thrift store isn’t bringing you joy, try another one! Pop into a few and take notes. You’ll know when you’ve found “the one.”
2. Go Often
Once you find a thrift store you love, go back regularly. I mean it.
Inventory changes constantly, and you’re way more likely to find something amazing if you pop in often. I don’t always leave with a haul, but I leave inspired—and that’s a win in my book.
3. Get to Know the People
Some of my favorite finds came from tips I got just by chatting with volunteers or staff. Ask questions!
When do new items usually come out? Are there sale days? Any upcoming seasonal restocks?
Thrift store teams are usually friendly and passionate. Building those connections adds another layer of joy to the experience.
4. Be Open-Minded
You might walk in looking for a vintage pitcher and leave with a stack of old children’s books with charming illustrations you want to frame. That’s the beauty of thrifting—you never know what you’ll find. And it is the thrill of the hunt!
Look at items for their potential. A worn basket might just need a little paint. A dated frame could become the perfect piece for your next DIY. Let yourself get creative.
5. Be Patient
Not every day is going to be a jackpot. Some days you leave empty-handed—and that’s okay. Thrifting is a process. It’s part treasure hunt, part creative inspiration, and always a little adventure.
If you keep your expectations light and your creativity open, you’ll enjoy the journey so much more.
In the End…
The real secret to great thrifting?
Curiosity. Creativity. Patience.
Let the process be fun. Let it inspire your next DIY or simply spark joy. And remember: you don’t have to find the perfect thing every time. You just have to enjoy the search. I hope you found this blog post helpful, and I hope it inspires your next thrifting adventure!
